The Newberries Computing Curriculum strives to:

• Help children to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world
• Aid children’s growth and confidence in their ever-changing world as it develops technologically.
• Follow our school values and use these to aid decision-making.
• Ensure that children become digitally literate (the ability to use, express and develop their ideas through information and communication technology) at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world

There are three main strands of the Computing Curriculum: Information Technology, Digital Literacy and Computer Science.

Information Technology is about the use of computers for functional purposes, such as collecting and presenting information, or using search technology.

Digital Literacy is about the safe and responsible use of technology, including recognising its advantages for collaboration or communication.

Finally, Computer Science introduces children of all ages to understanding how computers and networks work. It also gives all children the opportunity to learn basic computer programming, from simple floor robots in Years 1 and 2, right up to creating on-screen computer games and programmes by Year 6.

At Newberries Primary School, we pride ourselves in using programming software, which is freely available online. Please see the attachment below for links to the relevant sites.

E-Safety is an extremely important part throughout the whole of Newberries Primary School Curriculum. We include regular teaching of e-safety during each unit of Computing work as well as participate in e-safety enrichment days throughout each academic year. This ensures that children feel confident when using computers and the Internet and know what to do if they come across something either inappropriate or uncomfortable.
