Geography

The intention of the Geography Curriculum at Newberries Primary School is to inspire children’s curiosity and interest to explore the world that we live in and its people. Teaching should equip children with geographical skills to develop their knowledge of places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. Geography, by nature, is an investigative subject; therefore, we encourage children to discover answers to their own questions through the exploration and research of local and international case studies. This enables them to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it.

 

Each of our topics are shared between History and Geography as we believe the subjects are intrinsically linked. In this way, we can delve deeper into each topic, allowing us to gather the skills needed by studying them from a historical and a geographical point of view.

 

The Newberries Geography Curriculum strives to:

 

  • Provide children with an extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary.
  • Develop children’s knowledge of where places are and what they are like, both in Britain and the wider world.
  • Provide children with a comprehensive understanding of the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected.
  • fluency in geographical enquiry and the ability to apply questioning skills, as well as demonstrate effective presentation techniques.
  • Develop children’s fieldwork skills, as well as their ability to reach clear conclusions and explain their findings.
  • Develop children’s ability to express well-balanced opinions, through the use of their knowledge and understanding about current issues in society and the environment.
  • Instil in children genuine interest in the subject and a real sense of curiosity about the world and the people who live here.
