In Maths we have been acting out and recording our own number stories based on the story ‘Mr Gumpy’s boat’.  We had to choose a number and then create the boat crew with the same amount of legs. So for example if we chose the number 8 we could then choose a duck, a cow, and a person because their legs added together would make 8.  We challenged ourselves to find lots of different ways of creating the same number.

Great work Reception!

This week we have completed some follow up work from our zoo visit and we have started our new topic ‘on the beach’.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the zoo last week and were able to remember lots about it!  We talked about what had happened and the order that it happened; then using the language of ‘first, next, then, finally’ the children wrote fantastic recounts about the day.

Our books of the week have been ‘Clem and Crab’  and ‘Lucy and Tom at the Seaside’.  We have been learning about how to look after our beaches and wrote posters to tell others what they could do to help.  The children have enjoyed finding out what creatures live on the seashore and have completed some wonderful pictures with captions during Learning Through Play.

In Phonics we have been reading words that end in -ing (swimming, twisting, snapping) and -est (strongest, freshest) and -ed (smashed, bumped, trusted, melted).  The children work so hard to blend, segment and write these words - Well done Reception!

In Maths we have been working on halving and sharing.  We know that when we share amounts they have to be equal.  Reception enjoyed working outside to use natural materials (such as sticks and stones) to practise halving and sharing quantities.

This week the King of Story Land requested that we give him some stories!  So we have been busy creating and making our own characters.  We wrote a list of the good and bad characters that we knew and then wrote character descriptions; we also drew the homes that they lived in.  We made a fairytale map to show where everybody lives.  One of our favourite learning experiences this week was designing and making our own spoon characters!  We used our characters and worked together to act out a story to the class. Our adults were so impressed with our confidence and the story telling language we used that we all got a head teachers award!!

The King of Story Land loved the book of stories that we created for him - the children told him that stories have a beginning, middle and end and reminded him that sentences have a capital letter, finger spaces and a full stop.  The King was very impressed with the stories that the children wrote.

In Maths we have been working on understanding what ‘less’ means and creating our own take away number stories.  The children were fantastic at using the tens frames to show their understanding of taking away.

Well done for working hard Reception!

This week we have enjoyed our work on ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Rapunzel’. On Tuesday we received a letter from Rapunzel asking for our help to make new rules for a kingdom.  We confidently shared and explained our ideas on the carpet.  We also had to write a spell to make the dragon sleepy and were able to use our phonics successfully to write our ideas down.

We have been looking at pictures of kings and queens in the past.  The children were very interested in the clothes that were worn by royalty and noticed that in most pictures the king or queen was holding a sceptre and orb.  They used fantastic words to write a description of the pictures and then enjoyed creating a picture of themselves as a future king or queen.

In Maths we have continued to look at the composition of numbers beyond 10 and have also been explaining the properties of 2d shapes.  We went on a shape hunt outside and discovered that circles were the most popular shape in our environment.

We read ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ and created a shopping list and a recipe to make soup.  We carefully peeled and chopped some vegetables and have made our own vegetable soup.  It was delicious!

In Phonics we have been reading words with double letters and have continued to practice reading and writing longer words. In Maths we have continued to practise counting on from any number and finding the total of a group of objects.  We counted different arrangements of vegetables and talked about if there are eight carrots and eight potatoes then there is an equal amount of vegetables.

We have really been enjoying watching the tadpoles grow bigger and are excited that our caterpillars are now in cocoons!

We finished the week with a science workshop! It was great fun, we learnt about even though we can’t see air we know it is there- we did an experiment using balls and a hairdrier and then a very big ball and a very big drier.   We also learnt about forces and gravity; and did an experiment where we popped lids out of pots and they fell back down.  We had such a wonderful time!
